Frequency and Capacity

The Express Rail Link's design allows for a frequency of one train every three minutes.

It is estimated that during the first year upon the opening of the line for passenger service, there will be 109,200 passengers per day travelling between Hong Kong and the Mainland by the Express Rail Link. The number includes about 23,100 passengers travelling to Humen and Guangzhou South, including business travelers visiting their businesses and attending meetings in the two cities, and passengers who will interchange to the Pearl River Delta area or other major cities in the Mainland.

The Express Rail Link will operate at high frequency and speed:


  • During the peak period, there will be 114 pairs of short-haul trains running between Futian, Shenzhen North, Humen and Guangzhou South Stations every day, in which 84 pairs of the trains will stop at Futian and Shenzhen North Stations, and 30 pairs will stop at Humen and Guangzhou South Stations.
  • There will be a number of daily pairs of long-haul train to 14 major Mainland cities every day, the cities include Shantou(Chaoshan Station), Changsha, Guilin, Xiamen, Wuhan, Nanchang, Fuzhou, Guiyang, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, Kunming, Shijiazhuang, Shanghai and Beijing.

In the early stage after its completion, for most of the operating hours:


  • There will be an average 15-minute headway to Shenzhen North.
  • There will be an average 30-minute headway to Guangzhou South.
